How to Motivate your Students and Get them Talking in English

Presenter: Mark De Boer

Abstract: There are many different methodologies of teaching, but many don't work. Using a different approach, with fresh new activities based on sound research, Mark De Boer will share how he has achieved success in his own school. Mark will introduce the V-Task — a teaching method designed to help create autonomous learners in the classroom which is based on the Vygotskian Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) concept.

This presentation will outline the V-task and how it can be used in the classroom as an alternative methodology. This is a hands on workshop, where you the teacher will be able to try the activities and see why Mark has had such success in his school. The activities are task-based, fun, inspiring, and encouraging, working with the class as a group and each individual as an integral part of that group. We hope to see you there.

Bio: Mark De Boer is a Canadian living in Iwate Prefecture. He has been in Japan for about 10 years, owns his own school, primarily teaching young children. Currently he is completing an MA in TEFL/TESL focusing on education for young learners.

'Ancient Cobblestone Stained with Lifeblood' and Other Speech Contest Titles to Avoid

Joe BoothPresenter: Joe Booth, Sapporo Gakuin University

Abstract: It can be endlessly debated whether or not English speech contests are an educationally worthy endeavor. Regardless, they are a ubiquitous factor in the Japanese English education system. This presentation aims to bring participants, with a little help from their students, through the process of writing, practicing, and competing in speech contests.

In the first stage, Conception and Development, we will discuss what kind of speech topics are appropriate, as well as how to guide students through the process of putting their ideas into a coherent and meaningful speech. In the second stage, Preparation and Delivery, we will talk about a range of communication skills, like pronunciation or body language, that are inherent to giving speeches, as well as how to direct students ultimately to a successfully delivered speech.

The content of this workshop will be based on the presenter's own experience working with several dozen high school speech contestants over a six year period, but it is hoped that workshop participants will contribute their own ideas throughout the presentation so that we can all benefit from one another's knowledge. We will also have a chance to put into practice the concepts learned during the various phases of the workshop.
