Event Description:
Overview
English Central is all about immersion in authentic English language and personalized tracking of a student’s interaction with every word encountered. Such tracking also involves continuous evaluation of speech, diagnosis of sound challenges, and suggestions for further study and practice. This unique approach makes English Central a powerful and engaging way to improve English skills.
Objective
To introduce students to a fun and motivating way to improve their spoken English. The proven approach English Central has adopted is a Watch, Learn, and Speak strategy. First, the student or teacher can choose from a wide variety authentic videos, organized by a goal, topic, and/or difficulty level. Second, students study vocabulary by video or topic and both, teacher and student can track their progress on every word. Lastly, the students speak and receive immediate feedback. English Central includes personalized tracking, challenges, and teacher tools to aid in the student progress.
Technology
English Central is a web-based English language solution which students and teachers can access from any web-enabled computer anywhere in the world. English Central incorporates advanced voice recognition technology and enriched video content which is leveled at various standards such as TOEIC, TOEFL, and IELTS. English Central technology leverages cloud computing to provide easy to use teacher tools, interval vocabulary training, and pronunciation tracking.

Hirofumi Matsumura, General Manager - Japan
Matsumura started his career at Meitec, Japan's largest engineering services company. He then worked for Microsoft Japan as the Program Manager responsible for consumer game products. He joined Nuance and led the company's professional organization servicing automotive and mobile customers. He has a B.S. in Information Systems from Oxford Brookes University.

Jeff has over 17 years of experience working with universities and Fortune 2000 world-wide technology companies. Jeff holds a B.S from Central Michigan University in Business Administration.

Abstract
This presentation explores the challenges young English learners in Japan face in expressing confusion (i.e., “I don’t understand”) in a foreign language classroom. The presentation ends with a description of the emotional, physical, and verbal responses given by the young learners.

本プレゼンテーションでは日本にある外国語教室において低年齢の学習者が自分は混乱している（「理解できません」など）と伝えることの難しさについて探る。プレゼンテーションの最後では、低年齢の学習者が示す感情的、心理的、言語的反応を取り上げる。
Summary:
Young Japanese learners often experience frustration and shame when they are confused in their language class; frustration at not understanding content and/or instruction and shame that results from a culture that often places a greater emphasis on test results than language acquisition. The question is how can teachers assist students express their confusion and ask for assistance as well as overcome the shame that can inhibit learning. This presentation looks at activities and strategies that can help young learners in both areas.

Bio:
Rob Olson is an associate professor at Tomakomai Komazawa University. He has been teaching English to students of all ages in Hokkaido since 1991. He has written and illustrated “Cultural Dinosaur and Cultural Dinosaur 2”, comic books that humorously look at the differences of Japanese and American life.
